Introduction to polycarbonate materials

Polycarbonate

A polycarbonate structure made from bisphenol A. Polycarbonate (PC) is a colorless and transparent amorphous thermoplastic. Its name is derived from its internal CO3 group.

First, the nature

Density: 1.20-1.22 g/cm3

Linear expansion ratio: 3.8×10-5 cm/cm°C

Heat distortion temperature: 135 °C

1 chemical properties

Polycarbonate is acid and oil resistant.

Polycarbonate is not resistant to UV light and is not resistant to strong alkali.

2 physical properties

Polycarbonate is colorless, transparent, heat resistant, impact resistant, flame retardant, and has good mechanical properties at normal use temperatures. Compared with polymethyl methacrylate with similar properties, polycarbonate has good impact resistance, high refractive index, good processing performance and UL94 V-0 flame retardant performance without additives. However, polymethyl methacrylate is relatively inexpensive and can produce large devices by bulk polymerization. With the increasing scale of polycarbonate production, the price difference between polycarbonate and polymethyl methacrylate is shrinking.

Can not be exposed to hot water above 60 °C for a long time. When the polycarbonate burns, it will emit pyrolysis gas. The plastic will burn and burn, but it will not ignite. It will be extinguished from the fire source and emit a rare and thin phenol smell. The flame is yellow and the light is light. Black and black, the temperature starts to soften at 140 °C, and melts at 220 °C, which can absorb infrared spectrum.

Polycarbonate has poor wear resistance. Some polycarbonate devices used for wear and tear require special handling of the surface.

Second, production and application

Polycarbonate is a common material everyday. Due to its colorless transparency and excellent impact resistance, common daily applications include CD/VCD discs, bottled water bottles, baby bottles, bulletproof glass, resin lenses, bank anti-bullet glass, headlights, animal cages, moon landing aerospace The helmet mask of the staff and so on.

Third, the company and brand of polycarbonate production

example:

Nalge Nunc International: Nalgene®樽

Sabic's LEXAN® brand

MERLON® brand of Mobay Chemical Company

Bayer Company's MAKROLON® brand is also called "macrolon"

PANLITE® brand of Teijin Chemical Limited

Rubbermaid part of the otter

Dow

Fourth, the impact on the environment

1 food contact

Due to its clarity and toughness, hm producers and buyers of food storage prefer polycarbonate. When compared to silica glass, polycarbonate fibers are as lightweight and highly brittle. Polycarbonate is mostly used in disposable plastic water bottles and reused plastic water bottles.

More than 100 studies have explored the environmental impact of bisphenol A residues exuded from synthetic polycarbonate.

Howdeshell et al found that an endocrine interferon bisphenol A at room temperature appears to be infiltrated into water from a polycarbonate animal cage, and that it may be the cause of the enlargement of the female genital organs.

A paper analyzing the effects of low doses of bisphenol A leachate by vom Saal and Hughes in August 2005 seems to have found a hint between financial funding and conclusions:

· Industry-funded research appears to be inclined to find no significant impact.

· Government-funded research tends to find significant impact.

2 easy to chemically interact with other substances

Sodium hypochlorite and other alkaline cleaners should not be used in polycarbonate, otherwise an endocrine interferon phenol methane (bisphenol A) will be released, which will affect the reproductive system.

Will decompose polycarbonate
